Photography
Students explore the medium as a visual language via fine art and documentary practice, feeding into a multitude of possible professional areas and inter-related disciplines such as art or commercial work.
The course is taught in the knowledge that, as well as excellence, the market is always looking for new ideas. We aim to develop those ideas throughout the course, without compromise. Emphasising the creation of contemporary and relevant work, the course encourages the development of the student’s individual way of seeing through self initiated practice and set briefs..
Teaching is via one to one tutorials, group seminars and workshops in both analogue and digital areas. There are also opportunities to create collaborative work with other students from within the MA.
The photography lecture programme features visits from many high profile practising photographic artists, and students have the opportunity to meet with the lecturers and discuss their own practice with them. This is open to all routes. Sample lectures have covered; commissioning work, documentary practice, staged photography, editorial and advertising practice, portraiture, urban landscape and conceptual approaches.
An awareness of the differences between traditional wet processes and digital practice is desirable as is an ability to demonstrate a basic theoretical knowledge of contemporary aspects of the medium.
